| Barbados Barbados is the eastern most Caribbean island. The island which is less them one million years old. On February 17th 1627, captain Henry Powell landed with a party of 80 settlers to occupy and settle the island. This expedition landed in Hole town formally known as Jamestown. During the 1630’s sugar cane was introduced to the agriculture. The production of sugar, tobacco and cotton was heavily reliant on the indenture of servants. White civilians who wanted to emigrate overseas could do so by signing an agreement to serve as a planter in Barbados for a period of 5 or 7 years. After slavery was abolished in 1834, many new citizens of Barbados took advantage of the superb education available on the island, still today the literacy rate is 97%. The people of Barbados have a history of long ingrained Christian principles. The island is (21 miles) long and a smile (14 miles) wide. The capital is Bridgetown, population approximately 254,000 The National Baptist Convention USA Inc. has 2 churches presently in Barbados, West Indies.
